Tax Your Vehicle With No Logbook

Vehicle Tax Blog

Can I Tax a Car Without a DVLA Reminder?

Yes. GOV.UK also accepts a V5C in the current keeper's name or the green new keeper slip if you have just bought the vehicle.

The useful question is which official reference you can use instead.

Start with the official guidance

Use the source that matches your documents and circumstances before you make a payment or send personal details.

Step 01

Use your V5C if it is in your name

If you are the current keeper and have the V5C in your name, GOV.UK lists it as an accepted reference for the official online tax route. The reminder is not also required.

Step 02

Use the green new keeper slip after a purchase

A recent buyer can use the green new keeper slip. Tax does not transfer with a vehicle: a buyer must tax it before driving or make a SORN if it will stay off the road.

Step 03

If you have no reminder, V5C or green slip

A current keeper should check the replacement V5C route and may be able to use a V62 application at a participating Post Office where the official route applies. A new keeper without a green slip needs to apply for a new V5C by post.

Step 04

Do not wait for a reminder if tax is due

Use the official vehicle-tax checker for the current public tax status. If the vehicle will not be used or kept on a public road, read the SORN guidance instead.

Step 05

Keep your V5C address up to date

A missing reminder can follow a move. GOV.UK has a separate route for changing the address on a V5C. A registration lookup cannot replace the official document reference.

Built for quick decisions

Move from uncertainty to action without working through pages of filler.

Can I use my V5C instead of the reminder?

Yes, if it is in your name and you are the current keeper. GOV.UK lists it as an accepted reference.

Can I drive while I wait for a reminder?

Do not use the vehicle on the road until it meets the relevant legal requirements, including tax, insurance and MOT where required.

What if I moved home and did not get the reminder?

Check that the address on your V5C is up to date. A V5C in your name or a green new keeper slip may still give you an official tax route.
